About

Tom Brobson joined the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in 2005. He is responsible for communicating JDRF’s research priorities and needs to highest level donors.  Tom serves on a number of working groups and committees for JDRF including The Artificial Pancreas Task Force.

Tom was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2004.  He is one of a small group of people participating in genuinely revolutionary research helping to develop a device that will change the lives of everyone with type 1 diabetes – an artificial pancreas. JDRF is funding a number of clinical trials across the country testing the artificial pancreas, which combines the technology of the insulin pump and the recently approved continuous glucose monitor with a control algorithm – essentially a complex mathematical formula customized for each patient. The algorithm, the heart and mind of the Artificial Pancreas Project, used to be the missing piece. Now it exists thanks to JDRF’s leadership and your support.

Prior to joining JDRF, Tom worked for 16 years with his alma mater, Virginia Tech, in a number of capacities primarily involved with development work for the university’s science and applied science programs.  He has also worked in the Office of the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Service (HHS) in Washington, D.C. as a policy analyst and congressional liaison officer representing a number of agencies including the CDC, the Public Health Service, the NIH, the FDA, and the Medicaid and Medicare programs.
